The Library of the First Secondary Educational Institution in Katerynoslav : History, Activity, Personalities

Abstract

The article dwells upon history of library science of Katerynoslav. The history of opening and activity of the first educational institution in Katerynoslav is outlined. The library as a structural subdivision of the educational institution did paramount work in educational processes. The history of the educational institution began in 1793 and it acted as Chief People's College. The first books were textbooks and academic instructions approved by the Committee of People's Colleges. Book collections and their content are of great value. Katerynoslav classical gymnasia (1805) gave education to young men. It remained the most important educational institution until the end of the 19th century. The library being a subdivision of the gymnasia took the lead in spreading education in the region. The first library collection totaled 850 units. In 1859 the library had 4104 books. First teachers of the gymnasia worked as librarians at the same time: V. Yakubovsky, I. S. Afanasiev, O. I. Bartoshevich, F. F. Ordin, O. K. Krzhyzhanvsky. The most active and fruitful activity of the library was in the second half of the 19th century. It was the time of changes in education. Book collections atisfied users' requests and completely depended on support of gymnasia authorities.Katerinoslav is outlined.
